Shyonaka Oroxylum indicum

Shyonaka is a flowering tree whose common name is ‘midnight horror’! The flowers bloom at night and are pollinated by bats. The reason for the common name of ‘midnight horror’ is because the fruits of the tree are long and curved and point downwards, resembling sickles and swords. The large leaves also fall and wither from the tree and collect at the base and were traditionally believed to resemble piles of bones.

The trees are grown as an ornamental species but are also used in the traditional Ayurvedic formula for Mahanarayan Oil that we have made as a less scary version of in Active Oil.
